How Batbubble works

How Batbubble stores heat and gives it back

Batbubble turns electricity into heat when it is free or cheap, keeps it in an insulated tank, and releases it to your heating and hot water when you need it.

Four steps

Charge when energy is available. Use it when you need it.

  1. Capture affordable energy

Batbubble is designed to use energy from your solar panels and electricity bought during cheaper tariff periods.

  2. Turn electricity into heat

It is designed to work with a compatible heat pump, which makes heat efficiently, and built-in electric heaters, which add extra charging capacity.

  3. Store the heat

The heat is kept in Batbubble's insulated water tank. The insulation is designed to keep losses low while the energy waits. About the insulation.

  4. Heat your home

When you need heating or hot water, Batbubble sends the stored heat to your home's heating system and taps.

The Batbubble controller

The brain that decides when to make heat.

Every Batbubble comes with its own controller. It is designed to watch the tank, your solar panels and electricity prices, and to decide which heat source should run, and when.

You see what is happening on the touchscreen: how hot the tank is at the top, middle and bottom, and how much power is coming from the sun, the heat pump and the electric heaters.

Runs the heat pump first

A heat pump makes several units of heat from each unit of electricity, so the controller is designed to call on it first.

  • Signals a compatible heat pump when to charge the tank
  • Measures the heat pump's power use
  • Shows when the heat pump is running

Steers the electric heaters

Built-in electric heaters add charging power when the sun is shining or electricity is cheap.

  • Heaters at the top, middle and bottom of the tank
  • Power adjusted in fine steps to follow your spare solar output
  • Keeps total use within your home's main fuse limit

Connects to electricity prices

Over the internet, the controller is intended to read next-day electricity prices and plan charging for the cheapest hours.

  • Wi-Fi connection to the Batbubble service
  • Charging planned around dynamic tariffs
  • Designed to keep heating your home if the connection drops

Four simple operating modes

Auto

Picks the best mix of sun, heat pump and grid power for the moment.

Solar

Charges the tank only from spare solar electricity.

Grid

Charges from the grid, for example in cheaper price periods.

Off

Stops all charging. Stored heat is still available.

These are planned functions. Dynamic-price charging and automatic planning depend on the final control platform and completed product development.

FAQ

Questions about how it works

Does Batbubble replace my heat pump?

No. Batbubble stores heat. It is designed to work with a compatible heat pump and its own electric heaters, which produce the heat.

Does it need the internet?

The controller connects over Wi-Fi to read electricity prices. It is designed to keep heating your home if the connection drops.

Can I see what it is doing?

Yes. The touchscreen shows tank temperatures at the top, middle and bottom, and the power from solar, the heat pump and the heaters.
